    Let's get together!

You are invited to join NADCA Chapter 12 for our October Dinner Meeting at The Delafield Brewhaus. Engineering Project Manager, Alex Monroe, PHD, will present: Soldering is a Symptom of Die Casting Sticking.

Soldering and sticking are two of the most costly challenges in HPDC of Aluminum.  They cause down time, accelerated die wear/damage, and scrap castings.

Traditionally, soldering was believed to result from a reaction of the aluminum alloy with the steel die.  Sticking was believed to result from the same thermodynamically driven reaction. A recent project sponsored by NADCA has found that these reactions are not the cause of sticking, but a symptom that points to a poor friction condition. Sticking is driven by contact area and friction that develops from a cold ejection temperature. Soldering occurs in areas that eject at high temperatures and is similar to galling. The proper understanding of the causes of soldering enables new methods to reduce the defects.
